To follow in the last few posts, I’d like to mention high blood sugar as a risk factor for COVID-19 complications.
If you missed the post on April 7th, please revisit it (Read: A Critical Update on COVID-19). In it, I explained my reasoning in thinking that most of us will get COVID-19 this year, and that our best bet is to lower our risk of complications.
It seems that both types 1 and 2 diabetes have proven to be risk factors for complications. What I will discuss will focus on type 2, adult-onset diabetes.
Believe it or not, of all the major risk factors, this is one that can be reversed the most quickly.
For most anyone who has been diabetic for 15 years or fewer, there is a good chance of becoming non-diabetic in a few weeks. That is a bold claim. It is true even if you are on multiple medications and your levels are far from optimal.
We used to think that those who were type 2 diabetic were unable to respond to insulin. Now we know that their bodies are intentionally not responding to it.
It turns out that insulin brings fuel molecules inside your cells and into the mitochondria. If your body has been in a state of fuel overload, that would be dangerous. Putting in more fuel than your engines can handle is the most surefire way to damage them. Insulin resistance is not a mistake, it is a protective mechanism.
